The Dutch Cancer Atlas is an initiative by IKNL that was created in cooperation with several other entities. The Dutch Cancer Atlas closely follows the methodology and visualizations used for the established Australian Cancer Atlas, which was launched in 2018. The Dutch Atlas was created in close collaboration with the Australian Cancer Atlas team during its development. In particular, we would like to mention Peter Baade from Cancer Council Queensland and Kerrie Mengersen from QUT for their advice on the analyses. With respect to the visualization, we worked in close collaboration with ViseR (QUT).
The Australian Atlas was developed in collaboration with a team of statisticians, cancer researchers, visualization and IT experts from Cancer Council Queensland, Queensland University of Technology (QUT) and representatives from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW). It was supported by FrontierSI, with input from the government, the public, and the media.
For the Dutch Cancer Atlas, IKNL also relied on the expertise of internal and external statisticians, epidemiologists, researchers, and specialists in the field of cancer, as well as IT experts. Experts from scientific professional associations and cancer patient organizations, as well as epidemiologists and medical environmental specialists from all public health services (GGD) in the Netherlands, were invited to review the atlas, texts and interpretations of the variations in different cancer types in the Netherlands.
Furthermore, in response to the launch of the Cancer Atlas and in consultation with IKNL and GGD-GHOR Netherlands, the Dutch Cancer Society (KWF) decided to initiate the funding project Cancer Locally on the Map (Kanker Lokaal op de Kaart). Through this project, KWF provides additional funding, in addition to government resources, to public health services and municipalities to support regional approaches to cancer prevention.
